Description

The Marine Planner focuses on policy, coordination and engagement related to the planning, establishment, and implementation of Haida Protected Areas in Haida Territory. The Council of the Haida Nation is a co-governance partner in several protected areas, including Gwaii Haanas, SG̲áan K̲ínghlas - Bowie Seamount, Tang.ɢ̲wan-ḥačxʷiqak-Tsig̲is MPA, G̲aw K̲áahlii and X̲aana K̲aahlii Marine Refuges and the Great Bear Sea Marine Protected Area Network. 

The Marine Planner will be part of technical teams that includes marine biologists, planners, and other technical staff from the Council of the Haida Nation, other First Nations, the Government of Canada and Province of British Columbia aimed at implementing the Great Bear Sea Marine Protected Area Network in the Northern Shelf Bioregion.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Represent CHN’s interests and priorities as it relates to marine protected area planning and implementation.
  • Support the implementation of co-governance agreements, including Haida Nation MPA Agreement, MPA Network Agreement;
  • Coordinate with CHN technical and senior staff to provide input on collaboratively developed analyses, reports and communication materials.
  • Organize and support CHN-led engagement with Haida Citizens and Haida Gwaii communities.
  • Engage with stakeholder advisory bodies, including the Haida Gwaii Integrated Advisory Committee.
  • Develop briefings, presentations to update CHN representatives for various marine management- related meetings. 
  • Other related duties as directed.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • A passion for the ocean and the well-being of Haida Gwaii;
  • Knowledge of Haida culture, governance and language will be an asset;
  • Knowledge of CHN marine planning processes, management plans and agreements;
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written;
  • Ability to summarize and interpret technical information into plain language documents and presentations;
  • Ability to work effectively in a highly dynamic team environment, virtual and in-person, and with a significant level of autonomy and self-motivation;
  • Experience working in First Nations, multi-disciplinary teams, stakeholders and/or cooperative management groups;
  • Valid BC Driver’s License.
Education
  • Lived experience on Haida Gwaii, with education in marine or environmental planning, geography, ecological economics, natural resource management or a related discipline; or
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in marine or environmental planning, geography, ecological economics, natural resource management or a related discipline with a minimum 5 years of related experience;

$38.40 - $43.19 per hour based on experience, Full-time 35-40 hrs. per week
