Description

The Registered Professional Forester (RPF) plays a vital role in advancing sustainable forest management within Haida traditional territory. Reporting to the Director of Stewardship - Lands, the RPF will support the Nation’s goals of stewardship, cultural revitalization, economic development, and ecological integrity. The RPF will provide expert forestry advice, develop and review forest management plans, coordinate operational activities, and ensure all forestry-related decisions align with Haida values and title rights.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop and implement forest management plans that reflect Haida values, goals, and stewardship practices.
  • Review and assess forest stewardship plans, and development proposals to ensure cultural and ecological considerations are upheld.
  • Collaborate with community members and other stakeholders to integrate traditional knowledge into forestry practices.
  • Represent Haida in discussions and negotiations with forestry licensees, government agencies, and industry stakeholders.
  • Monitor compliance with relevant forestry legislation, including the Forest and Range Practices Act (FRPA), as well as Indigenous laws and land use policies.
  • Coordinate and conduct fieldwork, forest inventories, ecological assessments, and site-level planning.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior staff, community monitors, and forestry students.
  • Prepare technical reports, briefing notes, and recommendations for leadership and community review.
  • Support forestry-related revenue initiatives and help identify economic opportunities consistent with the Nation’s vision for self-determination and sustainability.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Registered (or eligible for registration) as a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) with the Forest Professionals British Columbia (FPBC).
  • Bachelor’s degree in forestry or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in forest management, planning, or operations.
  • Deep understanding of BC’s forestry legislation, regulations, and planning frameworks.
  • Experience working with or for Indigenous governments or organizations is a strong asset.
  • Strong interpersonal and facilitation skills; able to build trust and maintain respectful relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Commitment to Indigenous rights, title, sovereignty, and the integration of traditional knowledge in resource planning.
  • Ability to work in forested and remote environments; valid Class 5 Driver’s License required.
  • Experience and education equivalencies will be considered.

$ 42.77 - $44.49 per hour based on experience, Full-time 35-40 hrs. per week
