Description
Reporting to the Heritage and Natural Resources Department (HNRD) Manager, the Biologist will engage in technical projects to support the stewardship of Haida Gwaii's wildlife and biodiversity. This Biologist will assist with the monitoring and implementation of Ecosystem Based Management. The Biologist will also oversee and implement land-based restoration projects. Responsibilities include field and office work to collect and analyze data to inform operational and strategic initiatives.
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan and assist with monitoring of Haida Gwaii’s terrestrial wildlife and ecosystems, such as bird and nest surveys and bear den monitoring.
- Contribute to research in forest ecology that supports the culture and economy of Haida Gwaii.
- Assist with the development and implementation of land-based restoration plans, with a particular focus on stads k’un (Haida Gwaii goshawk) habitat.
- Plan, coordinate, and manage restoration projects as well as operational oversight of project delivery as required.
- Work with collaborators to develop monitoring and restoration proposals describing activities, timelines, and proposed budget.
- Support with pre- and post-harvest monitoring, such as Cultural Feature Identification (CFI) audits and Haida Gwaii Land Use Objectives Order effectiveness monitoring.
- Write comprehensive reports and perform detailed data analyses based on fieldwork findings.
- Help develop and implement a biology-focused professional development mentorship program.
- Work closely with the Stewardship Lands Director to support policy and regulatory development.
- Uphold the Council of the Haida Nation’s mandate and engage with the community to support knowledge sharing
QUALIFICATIONS
- Post-secondary education in biology or a related field.
- Registration with the College of Applied Biologists an asset, but not a requirement.
- Preference for candidates with experience with rare, endemic, or otherwise unique species and ecosystems.
- Experience supporting projects related to forest management, planning, stewardship, and/or Indigenous governance an asset.
- Proven experience with fieldwork, ecological research, and technical reporting.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in diverse and challenging environments.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Haida cultural values.
- Preference given to candidates of Haida ancestry.
- Candidates must reside on Haida Gwaii.
- Comfortable with remote fieldwork, including driving, hiking, and exposure to variable weather conditions.
- Proficiency with navigation and mapping equipment such as a compass, iPad, and ArcGIS.
- Must have a valid B.C. driver’s license and willingness to travel.
$39.55 - $44.59 per hour based on experience, Full-time 35-40 hrs. per week
