About the Role 
The Council of the Haida Nation (CHN) will soon be acquiring Peregrine Lodge effective June 15 and is seeking three Peregrine Lodge Caretaker / Maintenance Technicians to support the year-round operation, maintenance, and protection of Peregrine Lodge and surrounding infrastructure in Naden Harbour.

This role is ideal for individuals who enjoy remote work environments, hands-on maintenance, and marine or camp operations. Caretakers will live and work onsite in a remote coastal setting while supporting CHN staff, Guardians, and approved visitors accessing the lodge.
 
The position involves operating generators and equipment, maintaining buildings and utilities, supporting marine logistics, and ensuring the overall safety and functionality of the site. Two caretakers will work rotating schedules to maintain continuous coverage.
 
Key Duties & Responsibilities 
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: 

Lodge Operations & Maintenance
  • Operate, monitor, and maintain diesel generators and lodge infrastructure 
  • Conduct routine inspections and perform general maintenance and minor repairs 
  • Support water, septic, propane, and electrical systems 
  • Maintain cleanliness, safety, and functionality of lodge facilities and grounds 
  • Coordinate with contractors and communicate operational updates to CHN Property Management 

Fuel, Equipment & Marine Operations
  • Safely operate and maintain fuel trucks, heavy equipment, and utility vehicles 
  • Assist with fuel transfers, equipment transport, and marine logistics 
  • Monitor fuel usage and maintain accurate inventory and maintenance records 
  • Support annual dock setup/takedown and shoreline access operations 

Safety, Security & Stewardship
  • Act as onsite watchperson for buildings, equipment, and vessels 
  • Follow safety procedures, emergency protocols, and environmental standards 
  • Monitor for environmental risks and respond appropriately to incidents 
  • Maintain first aid readiness and emergency response capacity in a remote setting 

Visitor & Operational Support
  • Support CHN staff, Fisheries Guardians, and approved user groups visiting the lodge 
  • Provide site orientation and ensure safe use of facilities 
  • Assist with room preparation, laundry, and general operational support between visitors
 
Qualifications & Skills 
  • Experience working in remote or isolated environments such as lodges, camps, marine sites, or industrial settings 
  • Experience operating and maintaining generators, equipment, or mechanical systems 
  • Strong troubleshooting, maintenance, and problem-solving skills 
  • Experience with boats, marine operations, or heavy equipment considered an asset 
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a remote team setting 
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work and work outdoors in varying weather conditions 
  • Valid driver’s license required 
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification or willingness to obtain 
  • Class 3 Driver’s License, SVOP, Fuel Transportation, or Marine First Aid certifications considered assets (or willingness to obtain) 
  • Familiarity with Haida Gwaii or coastal operations considered an asset 
  • Preference will be given to Haida candidates as per Section 41 of the Human Rights Code.
 
Working Conditions
  • Remote fly-in/boat-in worksite with shared onsite accommodations 
  • Rotational or shift-based schedule to ensure continuous coverage (i.e., 2-week on, 2-week off)
  • Extended periods in remote field conditions with limited access to services 
  • Physical work including lifting, equipment operation, dock work, and outdoor maintenance year-round
