The Council of the Haida Nation (CHN) is responsible for the stewardship of lands, waters and people. Working with CHN means being part of a team that values collaboration, cultural knowledge, and meaningful contributions to the well-being of the Haida.
About the Role
Under the direction of the Operations Supervisor, the Haida Watchmen conduct creel surveys, monitors recreational fishing activities and collects data on recreational fishing activities. The Watchmen also collect DNA samples from chinook and coho and forward the samples to DFO for analysis and stock identification. Watchmen ensure that all operations are carried out in compliance with WorkSafe BC Occupational Health and Safety regulations and CHN policies regarding employment and safety.
Qualifications & Assets
- Must have knowledge and understanding of Haida Laws, traditions, and values as well as having past experience working with other indigenous organizations
- Willingness to work in isolated field camps (2 weeks on and 1 week off shift structure)
- Must demonstrate sound communication skills, both written and oral
- Experience in safe operation of small vessels and camp equipment
- Certification in First Aid, VHF radio operation and small vessel operation (or a willingness to receive training)
- Demonstrated ability to work with members of the public while maintaining a courteous and respectful manner
- Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License
- Preference will be given to Haida candidates as per Section 41 of the Human Rights Code.
What We Offer
- Hourly rate: $24.02 - $27.02 based on experience.
- Full-time (35–40 hrs./week) Seasonal from mid-may through September
